I hope this information may be of some interest to some of your older members. My father was a founder member of your society and had long lasting contact with Blackmore and Langdons which included growing new varieties on before they were named and offered to the public. I have some photos and slides and if anyone could make use of them I would be only to pleased to pass them on. |
Hi All,
Steve received a message from John Alfred Lewin’s Daughter today to say her Father had passed away.
I’ve heard his name numerous times.
I believe there’s a Cup presented by Alf for our National Show, for the Best Novice Exhibit at the National.
Mike will confirm this I’m sure.

Hi Steve I remember him he was a great friend of Steve Langdon and used to trial new begonias for them before they were introduced. Yellow Bali-hi was secured by him.
He must have been very old. Did his daughter mention his age?
Regards
Robert Bryce
Sorry to hear of his passing and yes indeed we have his trophy at the National Show.
Regards
Mike
Thanks for your reply. My Dad died in 1985 at the age of 78. He had a nursery in Leicestershire for many
years and specialised in growing dahlias and chrysanthemums for Unwins of Histon in Cambs. which we sent
out via mail order. His begonias were his major hobby and he also was a judge for the society for some years.
Hope this is enough info for now.
